Johnny Depp
I had my first Johnny Depp movie night!
Since my goal is to watch about 45 Johnny Depp movies in 2013, it won’t be the last. My supportive friends brought Johnny Depp movies, popcorn and pizza. We watched one of my old favorites – Edward Scissorhands, and one new treat – Arizona Dreams.
Those who are familiar with Johnny Depp’s work will not be surprized when I say both were amazingly, intriguingly strange and interesting.
I found out Edward Scissorhands can still tug at my hearstrings and tear ducts. One line gets me every time: ”Before he came…it never snowed.”
The visuals in this movie are incredible from the plain stark lines of the town at the beginning, to the intricate ice sculptures Edward creates. There are several times you have to tell your rational mind to shut up and just go with it – particularly about those big blocks of ice… And several of us were still pretty well disgusted with Kim (played by Winona Ryder) for not sneaking back up to the mansion. Regardless, it’s still one of my fovorite Johnny Depp movies.
What do you think?
Arizona Dreams had an interesting thread - the fish shown on the cover. It runs (or should that be swims) throughout the movie. It’s not the only time a fish has been used as a unifying theme through a movie. Big Fish is one that comes to mind; it’s also strange and interesting. It doesn’t have Johnny Depp, but it does have Helena Bonham Carter who plays opposite Johnny Depp in several movies. (Maybe 2014 should be the year for Helena Bonham Carter.) Arizona Dreams takes its time, exploring the increasingly strange characters and their relationships to each other. The acting was excellent! I couldn’t decide who I found the most compelling.
One of my favorite bits was watching the recreation of the attacking plane from the movie North by Northwest. This time with an ultralight (flown by Faye Dunaway) versus an aspiring actor (played by Vincent Gallo) who had enjoyed acting out that scene. He certainly didn’t enjoy it so much when it really happened…
So, 2 down, 43 to go!
The Incredible Not-So Invisible Cat
Girly Girl is going on 12 years old. As I’ve mentioned before – she always disappears when company comes over and won’t come out until they’re gone. So imagine my surprise when she suddenly jumped into my lap while we were watching Johnny Depp. There were 3 people she’d never seen before in the room. I guess Johnny’s efffect is as strange and interesting on pets as on his movies! It’ll be interesting to see if she continues to come out whenever I have company or just when Johnny Depp is on. Actually, it’s more likely it will never happen again.
I guess time will tell.
Kat-tastrophe
I may have witnessed a minor miracle this past week. OhNo, who is nearly 7, didn’t knock anything over, didn’t attack the toilet paper, and didn’t rip anything up. She didn’t even hide something I needed under a piece of furniture. Basically, she didn’t cause any problems all week! I’m not sure if that’s a cause for celebration, or if I should be worried there’s something wrong with her…
I’ll let you know what happens.

It must have been the Johnny Depp Charisma working on your scaredy-cat…
